Oliver's an Omnivore!

Today was the first day that Oliver had for dinner what we were having.  We're still a long way from that being a regular occurance, but it was pretty cool and definitely a glimpse into our future.  What a big boy we have now!   It was also the first time he had chicken, which he seemed to like.  He had ZERO interest in the broccoli, however.  What is it with kids being averse to all green vegetables?  Unbelieveable! 

Also, as a side note - I made dinner tonight winging it without a receipe. Adam & Jana had their doubts, but it ended up quite tasty!

Another Weekend Visit

My sister and nephew spent the weekend with us again.  We had so much baby fun! Oliver was considerably less enthusiastic about this baby that kept distracting his Mommy AND Daddy. If one of us was holding Devon, even if the other parent was right there, Oliver wanted to be held by the parent paying attention to Devon. We would joke about it that everytime Oliver would wake up he was thinking, "damn, that kid is still here!?!". By the end of the weekend, he was giving Devon "hugs". Translation: laying his cheek on him. It was very cute. He was less jealous at the end too.

Things to Remember: Month 9

My, my, how time flies!

Yesterday we went for Oliver's 9month appointment.  He continues to be in the 75th percentile for height, but he has dropped to the 25th percentile for weight - he is long & lean!  They said it is perfect normal for highly active boys (a category Oliver definitely falls into!) not to gain as much weight, since they are burning so many calories.  However, since he dropped from the 75th to 50th percentile the last time and now from the 50th to the 25th percentile, they suggested we bring him in again before his 12month visit just to keep an eye on his weight gain.

2 Month Comparison

I couldn't help but compare the size of the two cousins (at the two month mark) after yesterday's visit with the lil' munchkin.

Less Cute

In just the last day or two, we have started to see the less-cute side of Oliver's blossoming personality.  Yesterday afternoon, he was biting when you did something he didn't like.  I hadn't noticed it sooner, but Jana informed us he had been doing that last week as well.  How many times has he tried to bite me and I have thought it was a kiss???  So, now we are faced with our first discipline dilemma. 

This morning, Oliver had his first temper tantrum - tears and all.  Usually, when he is getting into something you don't want him playing with, you can re-direct/distract him with something else.  Today, when he tried to get into the toilet, I gave him a plastic container to play with instead and closed the toilet lid.  He was not a happy boy - you'd have thought he was hurt the way he was carrying on! 

Meeting Cousin Devon

My sister came down for a visit and we had such a blast meeting Cousin Devon.  I know its been less than a year since Oliver was that small, but we had already forgotten how little and delicate babies are when they are just two months old.  We can't wait to see him again!!!

Eating Big Boy Food!

Jana has been feeding Oliver chunks of banana every morning this week.  It's so great to see him eating more solid food.  Now that he has mastered picking up banana bits (which Adam admitted this morning, wasn't even easy for him to get off the highchair!) I'm going to start experimenting with a variety of stuff - first up, avocado, which he didn't like when it was mashed up.  Maybe it will be more fun if he can play with it.  Messy eating has begun!  Oliver has also started reaching for the spoon and wants to feed himself.  Mealtime is about to come to a schreeching (sp?) halt.  I'm really looking forward to when we can feed Oliver a little bit of whatever it is that we are eating for dinner.

 

Snow Day

When I went out this morning to shovel our sidewalk, I brought in a tupperwear container of snow for Oliver to play with.  He was a bit perplexed, but then it ended up in his mouth, just like everything else.

Today's Cute Oliver Story

Diaper changes have gotten more difficult lately, as Oliver likes to turn over mid-change.  This seems to be a problem for Adam more often than for Jana and I.  We usually just make sure he is entertained with a toy before starting, but for some reason, this method doesn’t work for Adam.  Yesterday, Adam decided to do a quick change on the floor (since Oliver was doing back flips on the changing table) only to find out mid-change that it was a poopie diaper!  Luckily, I was close by and able to help. 

This morning, Adam went down this morning to handle the morning diaper change.  Lately, Oliver has been waking up between 5:30-6:30am and will go back to sleep after a quick change (yeah!!!).  Adam came up and said that Oliver had flipped over to a crouching position, midchange, and had then fallen asleep.  Adam didn’t know what to do - Wake him up to finish zipping him??  And risk him staying awake for good???  I don't think so!  So, he put Oliver back in his crib as is.  Lately, we have both been leaving the house while Oliver & Jana are both still asleep (awesome for everyone).  I knew Jana was going to be plenty puzzled at the sight of Oliver when she got him and I was glad we were still home when it happened.  Oliver woke up again just as Adam and I were leaving.  Jana stood with him at the top of the stairs - Oliver was unzipped, so you could see his body in his undershirt and his one leg wasn’t even in the Pjs.  It was quite a sight! 

When I emailed back and forth with her later, Jana said she thought we had forgotten to do the snap on the top of the Pjs last night and Oliver had figured out how to unzip them and was in the process of taking off the whole outfit – thankfully, that wasn’t the case!

Ricardo

I don't know why, but Adam has named Oliver's monkey, Ricardo.  We got Ricardo as a Christmas present last year and he matches the nursery.  Oliver has just recently gotten interested in the monkey.  He gets a big kick when Adam plays Monkey-peek-a-boo and he likes to eat the monkey's face.  Most recently, when you hold the moneky up to him, he will give it a big hug, often times, tipping forward/over in the process. 

Oliver's New Tricks

Jana has been diligently sending both photos and videos since I went back to work (for real) this week.  The single best feature on my new Droid is that I can see the videos she sends!!!  Oliver's newest trick (as of Tuesday) is that he will "kiss" you when prompted.  It's a cute, open-mouthed leaning into your cheek, but still - precious!

Jana said that if she is in the kitchen and she calls to him, "Oliver wo bist du?" (Oliver where are you?), that he comes crawling towards her.  This is especially useful, if not as cute.  Having trouble with the second video and will try to post again later. 

My Entry: American Baby Contest

Through Parents.com I entered the American Baby Photo Contest.  They pick 5 semi-finalists to go to NYC in February and there's a cash prize for the winner.  The chances are remote that Oli gets picked, but it was fun to do anyway.  You needed to submit photos from the past month and they wanted photos that showed the childs personality/emotion.  Part of the judging (33%) is based on the quality of the photo, and not just the cuteness of the kid.  I've seen a lot of submissions (lots of my FB friends with kids submitted entries) and most of the photos weren't stellar.  I used the following 6 photos, because I thought they were a nice mix/range of personality.
