18mo Update

Time continues to fly by and we are constantly amazed at the pace which Oliver is learning new things.  It is truly fascinating to experience -- I'm trying to have my camera and Flipvideo on hand more often so we can capture the little-milestones.  Hopefully, a movie-compilation will follow shortly (as soon as I figure out how to use the software).

We took Oliver for his 18mo doctor appointment shortly after his hospital stint.  He remains in the 10th percentile for weight and 50th percentile for height.  We saw a new doc, since Adam didn't have a great experience the last time around, and I really got a good vibe from him.  We'll see what Adam thinks when he takes Oliver back for shots on Wednesday.

  • When you ask what color something is, the answer is always Blue!
  • Oliver associates the word "heike" with bathtime, which is pretty hysterical.  We were playing with the foam bath letters and taught him that H is for "Heike".  Now he says "Heike" everytime he grabs one of the blue letters (to be fair the N & Z don't look that different from H), and says my name everytime we go into the bathroom (even if it is to grab a tissue or brush teeth).  We tried teaching that A is for "Adam" but Oliver can't say Adam, he says "Ahm-me".
  • A few days ago, when I put Oliver to bed and grabbed the closest book on the nightstand, Oliver kept say "barney, barney".  I had no idea what he was talking about, so I let him slide off my lap.  He went straight for the bookshelf and pulled out the Runaway Bunny - he was saying "bunny" -- this was his very first reading request!  I love that he has a favorite and enjoys reading.  I'm sure we will be playing more book-detective in the months to come.
  • He is very close to being able to jump - SO close!
  • Oliver & Adam have a game where Adam puts Oliver in the granny cart in the basement and wheels her around the basement.  Oliver has to say "1, 2, 3, GO!" before Adam will start moving.
  • He's getting so much better at counting and singing - twinkle twinkle and ABCs are very popular.  The number 5 now exists.  Oliver switches back and forth from English to German while counting, which is pretty cool.
  • Olive loves to give babies hugs - it feels a little like he is "Lenny" from Of Mice & Men, but still adorable.
  • Oliver continues to be full of manners and loves walking around charming neighbors and passerbyers.  He loves to say "see you soon" and is still very good about saying his please and thanks and even says "bless you" when he hears someone sneeze.
  • Elmo and the Sesame Street gang are loosing ground.  Thomas the Engine and Bob the Builder are current favorites - Oliver loves all things with wheels -- planes, trains, & automobiles!
  • Oliver has adopted my love of tea!!!  And is learning how to drink out of a cup that doesn't have a lid.  He tells us "twist, twist" when he wants us to take the lid off of a sippy cup.
  • Oliver is very good at opposites -- on/off, up/down, open/close all get used a lot in our house.
